Real-life to royal: Kate Middleton
Kate Middleton is arguably the most famous commoner to marry a royal.
Born into a distinctly middle-class family - she grew up in Bucklebury, in Berkshire, where her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, run a mail-order business selling toys and games for children's parties.
Her parents met while they were working for British Airways - he was a flight dispatcher and she was an air stewardess.
Kate, the eldest of three children, was educated at the exclusive Marlborough College in Wiltshire before continuing her studies at St Andrews University in Fife in 2001 where she met Prince William.
The pair were friends before they became romantically involved, and in 2002 moved into a student house together with two other friends.
It wasn't until 2004 that the couple's relationship went public during a ski holiday in Klosters, Switzerland.
The couple, who split briefly in 2007, married in 2011 and are now parents to 11-month-old Prince George.
